Phycocyanin is a protein that is extracted from blue-green algae, and has antioxidant properties. Fucoxanthin is a type of carotenoid, it is a xanthophyll, structurally similar to Beta Carotene and vitamin A. Despite its molecular structure, Fucoxanthin does not act as a vitamin itself, but rather contributes to enhancing the metabolic rate and the loss of fat. Fucoxanthin is such a special molecule that offers a wide range of bioactivities. Results from animal studies have shown its potential value in the prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases, such as obesity, diabetes or other chronic diseases.


Astaxanthin is a carotenoid, belonging to the phytochemical series of terpenes. It is a colored fat- soluble pigment, which unlike some carotenoids, does not convert to vitamin A (retinol) in the human body. Excess vitamin A is toxic to humans, but not astaxanthin. It is a powerful antioxidant comparable to vitamin E that combats oxidative stress and is very beneficial for skin, eyesight, and cellular health. Studies in humans have confirmed the role that astaxanthin plays as an antioxidant and powerful anti-inflammatory.


Spirulina is a microalgae with a high protein content, which has led the WHO to consider it as the best food for the future. It has a high nutritional value because it is an important source of linoleic acid (omega 6 fatty acid), palmitic and oleic fatty acids, vitamins (A, B complex, E, biotin, folic acid, inositol), natural pigments, essential amino acids and minerals. Phycocyanin in fatty phase shows anti-inflam m atory activity at the tw o upper concentrations tested (0.04 and 0.02%). The anti-inflammatory activity displays a dose-dependent pattern, decreasing with the coMpound concentration.
